Almost 30,000 people gathered Dec. 15 to watch The 16th Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, between Western Athletic Conference champ Utah State and Mid-American Conference Toledo.
But the day was not just about football. Kuna Gold Marching Band and Color Guard performed the pre-show, and opener to their 2012 marching show, “By the Grace.” The band was invited to perform after bowl staff watched the group’s performance at the District III Marching Band Competition in October, and it was the first time in the bowl’s history that a local high school marching band was featured along with bands competing schools.
“The students represented KHS and Kuna very well and brought the instrumental music program to a new level,” said Kuna band director Zeb Bellon.
The appearance at the Famous Potato Bowl capped an historic year for the KHS music program. Not only did the band and color guard perform the most difficult show they have ever done, but achieved high scores and ratings at every performance, turning heads and drawing high praise from judges and community members.
A new booster organization, The Kuna Gold Parent and Community Organization (KGPCO) also formed this year. The KGPCO works with the band, orchestra and color guard programs to help insure success by fundraising and supporting the instructional staff and freeing them up to do what they do best—teach. The KGPCO also takes care of uniforms, plans meals, chaperones, and cheers on the students. Music education is a vital part of any academic program and helps students gain confidence, improve analytical skills, engage in positive socialization and opportunity to earn college scholarships.
The KGPCO hopes the community will not only stand behind the district’s music programs, but also help out financially. Many thanks go out to those who have contributed already, but the music programs are also seeking private and corporate sponsors to help ensure the instrumental music remains available to all students in the KSD.
