A 41-year-old Kuna man was shot by three Ada County Sherriff and a Boise police officer in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 9 near the intersection of Cloverdale and Barker Roads after a short chase.
The incident began around 12:20 a.m. when a 911 from a house in the 13000 block of Madera Place in Kuna was received in which the man had threatened and pointed a gun at a man related to him and then fled in a Nissan pickup truck. Sherriff’s deputies began searching for the pickup and
At 2:20 a.m. the suspect called 911 and “made threatening statements and indicated he may be planning to harm himself and others,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.
Police were able to locate the general area where the suspect called from by pinging his cell phone location.
At around 3 a.m. deputies spotted the pickup parked near the intersection of Cloverdale and Poen roads. The suspect got out of his pickup, pointed a gun at himself, then returned to the pickup and drove south on Cloverdale with police in pursuit. At some point he turned around and headed north in the direction of pursuing police who did not make an attempt to stop him as per policy when a suspect is considered dangerous to themselves but not to others at the time.
A Meridian police officer joined the pursuit and set out a spike strip across the road that disabled the tires on the pickup bringing it to a stop near Barker Road.
The man exited his vehicle holding a gun and pointed it in the direction of the deputies. The four pursuing officers on scene opened fire. The number of shots fired is undetermined but the suspect was hit by at least one bullet. The suspect was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center where staff told the sheriff’s office the suspect is expected to survive his injuries.
The officers involved with the incident have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation as according to agency policies.
The Meridian Police Department has been selected to lead the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force, which is activated to investigate whenever officers fire guns in confrontations with suspects.
