After 26 years, a lot of trash has been hauled out of Melba, and on Saturday, April 27, residents can have a whole lot more be taken away in what has become an annual event.
This Saturday, J & M Sanitation, City of Melba, Canyon County Solid Waste, and Pacific Steel and Recycling are sponsoring Melba Clean-Up Day. Melba residents can dispose of all non-hazardous wastes safely and help Clean-Up Melba.
J&M Sanitation will offer free curbside pick-up within the City limits throughout the morning and large dumpsters will be placed in the lot behind Melba City Park. Drop off times will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Large items such as washers, dryers, and residential refrigerators can also be disposed of. Refrigerators and air conditioners with compressors will cost $20.00 to dispose. A limit of four old tires per household is allowed with fees applied. Light truck and passenger tires will be $2.50 each if they are off the rim and $4.25 if they are still on rim. Semi-truck tires are $8.00 off and $16.00 on the rim. Farm tires and large old tires are negotiable.
Chemicals, fertilizers, paint and motor oil are not accepted.
Over the past 26 years, J & M estimates it has hauled away about 1000 tons of trash.
Many things have been hauled away that a person wouldn’t likely expect, including snowmobiles and appliances but the strangest being a full size camper.
“We believe it is good for the community to come together over the years, especially as the community grows. People come together to help those that can’t get around as well or just simply don’t have the means to haul the trash to a landfill,” said Todd Gordon of J & M Sanitation. “This day helps many people clean out all the stuff that we tend to pile up over time.”
To help get into the spirit of things they have created the Clean-Up Competition for organizations and neighborhood groups with a $100 grand prize.
Everyone is encouraged to participate. Contact Melba City Hall at 495-2722 or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you need help, need more information, want to register a group or have large items such as appliances that will need to be picked up.
Make sure to get your energy up with the continental breakfast for volunteers at the Melba Senior Center for volunteers starting at 8 a.m.
