Kuna School District is offering All-Day Every Day Kindergarten for the 2013-2014 school year, with one program housed at Crimson Point and additional programs possible if enough families commit to a tuition-based program.
This year, an All-Day Every Day tuition-based program was offered at Reed Elementary. Positive reports abound from staff and parents. Debbie Ryan, the program teacher, shared her thoughts about the program in a letter to the district leadership team.
“My students have now, for the most part, mastered kindergarten standards in all subjects. I am spending my evenings finding activities and themes for them to challenge them now and providing learning experiences that we have never had time for in kinder. The thing that excites me the most is that they are learning to be independent, care for each other and are truly excited about learning,” Mrs. Ryan wrote.
Kuna district strongly endorses the principle that kindergarten provides children with critical learning opportunities. Because of this conviction, the district has worked hard over the past few years to provide a program despite the tightening state budgets. The leadership team will continue to seek ways to improve the kindergarten experience for our children, and to make it as accessible as possible for families.
All students who attend kindergarten in Kuna schools benefit, whether they are on the A/B or every day schedule. They experience specials classes, such as PE, Music, and Library, and learn to eat lunch in the school cafeteria. They attend field trips and assemblies. They learn social and behavioral skills necessary to be part of the school and community. They receive instruction from staff who all meet the state department highly-qualified requirements. The Kuna teachers are preparing to meet the challenges of the new nationwide “Common Core Curriculum,” and our kindergarten program lays the groundwork students need to meet the new challenges.
The pilot this school year with the all-day every-day tuition kindergarten has been so successful that the district hopes to expand. The tuition program is an affordable way for families to give their children full day, every day education opportunities from certified, experienced staff in a school environment. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s school to express interest as soon as possible so the district can plan for more programs if need demands.
