As one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in the Treasure Valley there are those that say El Gallo Giro has helped put Kuna on the map. El Gallo Giro, which in Spanish refers to the highest quality breed of fighting roosters, opened its doors 15 years ago by Enrique Contreras and Ana Paz.
Enrique started working in the food industry as a boy in his family’s taqueria in Guanajuato, Mexico. At the age of 17 he came to Boise where he went to work at the restaurant Acapulco as a dishwasher, then server, kitchen manager and eventually the General Manager.
It was during this time that he met Ana who was working as a hostess. Ana has worked several years in administration in different office environments, including management with McDonald’s where she learned to manage payroll, accounting and other office management skills. Since day one she has worked alongside Enrique to open El Gallo Giro and make it the success it is today.
In 1998 they had the opportunity to open El Gallo Giro in Kuna. This family owned and operated restaurant offers traditional authentic meals from Mexico, like menudo, and their $1 tacos.
“People say they think they’re in Mexico when they visit here,” said Enrique, referring to the hacienda-style décor of the restaurant.
During holidays such as Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day they have a brunch buffet. On the weekends they serve an average of 500 dinners a night. Enrique feels their popularity is due to the personal service they offer their customers.
“Come happy, leave happy,” is a favorite saying of Enrique.
Enrique and Ana have been very involved in the community. They’ve participated in the Mayor’s Book Club, which purchases books for the students in the club. Each year they give gift certificates to the volunteers of the Kuna Library and all the elementary schools as a thank you for their service.
They have been very generous in helping with fund raisers for the Boys and Girls Club of Ada County, Kuna Football, and all Kuna schools. They helped donate the funds for the Indian Creek Elementary School Rock, and this year Ana helped with the Kuna Senior Class committee to earn money for their overnight party.
“Thank you to all our wonderful customers who have kindly supported us all these years,” said Ana.
El Gallo Giro is located at 482 West Main Street in Kuna. Customers may call for reservations or takeout orders at 922-5169.
