Drum corps International is a drum and bugle corp is a musical marching unit consisting of brass instruments, percussion instruments and color guard, specializing in marching bands. Members perform in on-field competitions, parades, festivals and other civic functions touring across the country during the summer. What makes these young adults want to stand for hours, rehearsing the same routines repeatedly in the blazing sun or freezing rain?
Determination is what was seen on the faces of these students as they worked in 103-degree temperatures last Tuesday, July 2. It was grueling to be more specific; leg cramps and swollen feet, they seemed to work through the pain and continued on. The intense schedule goes on for approximately 10,000 miles of road that they will cross including numerous shows performed all summer long.
Also apparent–sheer pride, enthusiasm and joy were present in all the drum, bugle, and color guard members.
When asked, what advice would you give someone wanting to join the Drum Corp?
Jessica Jones said, “Prepare yourself mentally and physically because you will reach your limits, it’s a commitment.”
The question on everyone’s mind is, why do you like doing this?
“It’s a passion of mine. In Drum Corp everyone has to contribute at the highest level for the Corp to be great.” Jessica said.
World Class scores: 1st – Santa Clara Vanguard 77.900, 2nd – Blue Knights 72.500, 3rd – Oregon Crusaders 64.6900, 4th – Cascades 53.600; Open Class scores: 1st – Thunder 65.100 and 2nd – Columbians 58.700
