The Kuna football team launched their season with an impressive win over Nampa last Friday night with a 49-14 trouncing. Kuna won the toss and elected to receive against the Bulldogs. After two out-of-bounds kicks by Nampa driving them back to kick from their own 35-yard line to open the game, Kuna drove 55 yards downfield where Spencer Trautman ran it in for a touchdown from the two yard line.
In the next drive, Nampa scored on pass to Jake Hull from quarterback Braydon Torres-Moore tying up the game.
Although it seemed as if it was going to be an offensive game trading touchdowns after the first two drives, Kuna came back to dominate both offensively and defensively with an unanswered 42 points, 21 in the second quarter and another 21 in the third. Kuna scored two touchdowns within 33 seconds of each other after a turnover by Nampa.
In the second half, Nampa came out and tried to gain the momentum but after their first play of the second half where they turned over the ball on a fumble to Kuna, they never seemed to get their mojo rolling.
Kuna dialed it back with second team players in the fourth quarter. Nampa scored one more time on a run by Jonathan Koenig.
Clearly Spencer Trautman had a good game with 18 carries for 238 yards and four touchdowns. Not to be overshadowed in the Kuna backfield, Colton Kesling carried seven for 33 yards, Jade Palmer-six carries for 61 yards and Jacob Kellog-eight carries for 29 yards. Kuna has a strong group of running backs that pounded the Nampa defense all night long. Nampa had a total of 130 yards rushing.
Kuna sophomore quarterback Ben Ruwe, winning the starter position after leading the pack during preseason practices, completed nine of 14 passes for a total of 216 yards and two touchdowns.
This Friday night Kuna faces Skyview, going in to the season ranked 4th in the preseason poll. Kuna did was not ranked in the top five but did receive one vote. After week one, Skyview moved up to third overall in state behind Bishop Kelly (1st) and Bonneville (2nd) but Kuna did receive 4 votes so people are taking note of Kuna’s rising prowress. Skyview is expected to be one of the biggest games for the season and if Kuna knocks them off they should expect to break the top five. Last week Skyview narrowly lost to Bishop Kelly in a 14-10 slugfest.
