Kuna School District has filed a petition that it stay in the 4A conference as opposed to moving to 5A due to school population growth. New student numbers would put Kuna in the 5A category for the 2014 to 2016 cycle. Along with Kuna, two other 4A schools, Nampa and Columbia, are expected to move to the 5A conference with Emmett dropping to 3A.
Due to an error in reporting student numbers for the 2012-2013 school year, the average student count was 1.5 students over the 1,280 student level for the 5A conference. This year, Kuna has 1,340 students enrolled, well over the student numbers for a 5A school. This year’s enrollment would definitely cause Kuna to move to 5A for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years.
Kuna Athletic Director Ron Emry told the Idaho Press Tribune that he doesn’t anticipate that IHSAA will accept the petition. Unless IHSAA accepts Kuna’s petition or adjusts the student population levels to keep the conferences balanced at their board meeting on September 24, then Kuna will enter a conference with 12 other schools for the 2014-2015 school year. Capital High School’s athletic director expects that with 13 schools, the 5A SIC will most likely split in to two divisions.
