When Jaclyn Schuster was six she had very long hair that would take some time to comb out. One evening while her mother was busy at the task of detangling the local news was on; the story was about two girls that had to cut their hair and how they were going to donate it to Locks of Love.
Curious, Jaclyn asked her mother what Locks of Love was? Jaclyn took the story to heart and decided that she wanted to give her hair to Locks of Love to help the sick children who had none.
You could say the rest is history, Jaclyn now 18, has continued to donate her hair. Her last donation of 13 inches brings the total to approximately 80 inches in all.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality of hair prosthetics. Locks of Love provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
Jaclyn shared that by doing this it has changed her life, making her more aware of what happens in the world and what other people have to face in life.
“Even if your life isn’t so great it could be so much worse,” she said. “I would also like to encourage everyone to donate their hair, because some kids are not lucky enough to have any, and they can all ways grow more,” she added with a smile.
She also thanks her mom for helping her achieve her goals, saying that without her encouragement she would have been lost.
Jaclyn graduated from Melba High School last year and is looking at going college to study writing. In addition, Jaclyn plans to continue to donate her locks for as long as she can.
