Long time beloved Idaho educator and first Idaho All American Football Player (BJC), Richard Dale Nelson, 88, of Boise, Idaho died Friday Nov 22. He was born in 1925 in Albion, Nebraska to parents Ella & Clarence Nelson, farmers. Richard graduated from Boise High School in 1944, lettering in football all 3 years. He then joined the Marine Corps. After boot camp he completed Naval Radio training at Texas A&M, and did his tour of duty during WWII in the Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima, Le Shima and Okinawa, discharging as a corporal in 1946 and returning to Idaho, farming, and playing football at Boise Junior College. He married the late Juanita Mae Montgomery in 1948. Nelson began his career as an educator in 1952, teaching 5th grade at Whittier Elementary School in Boise. He completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the College of Idaho and his PhD in Educational Administration at the University of Idaho. He later served as principal at Hillcrest
Elementary, vice principal and principal of Borah High, superintendent of Cascade Schools, Northern Idaho Director for the Idaho Department of Education, and superintendent of Moscow Schools. Nelson also served in the Idaho Air National Guard Reserve as a Lt Colonel. Nelson was inducted into the BSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Kratz Momand Nelson, his brother, Clarence McKinley Nelson, his children: Rebecca Nelson Foote, Ruth Nelson Schnoor, Benjiman Dale Nelson, and Samuel Bruce Nelson; his grandchildren: John Foote, Jolene Cartwright Bernal, Edward Eastlack, Marc Foote, Jeffrey Eastlack, Gabriel Nelson, Amy Foote Nakken, Jennifer Foote Brown, Nate Nelson, Sarah Nelson Hummel, Erin Nelson. A celebration memorial service will be held in Richard’s honor on Monday December 9th at the Meridian Friends Church on 1021 W Pine Ave. in Meridian, Idaho at 3:00PM.
