This last December was a busy one for the Performing Arts Department at Kuna High School. The week began with the amazing talents of Community Christmas Choir in their 2nd annual performance on Sunday December 15th. The Kuna Performing Arts Center was full nearly to capacity as members of the community enjoyed the talents of many others in the community. Monday December 16th, the Kuna High School choirs directed by Corrina Steinbach performed their annual Holiday Choral Concert. The Kuna High School Orchestra, directed by Dennis Reese followed up with their performance on Tuesday December 17th. Wednesday December 18th, the Kuna High School Bands also had a concert.
Currently, rehearsals are underway for Kuna High School’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance”. This musical is an operetta which means a LOT of singing. The basic storyline for “Pirates of Penzance” is that the main character Frederic has been apprenticed to a pirate until his 21st birthday. The play begins on Frederic’s 21st birthday in which he is leaving his apprenticeship. Frederic doesn’t like the work that pirates do, but as he was apprenticed, he was bound by duty. Once his duty was over, he decided he did not want to continue and instead committed himself to a life of fighting piracy. He meets Mabel and the two fall in love, though there are many complications that arise as the play progresses. Dallin Warnick, a senior has been cast as Frederic, while Frederic’s bride-to-be is double-casted by senior Anna Farris and junior Rebecca Orr. Carson Trautman, a junior is playing the role of the Pirate King, and Ethan Fisher is playing Samuel, the king’s right-hand man. Senior Robert Riley is playing the role of the Major General. Ruth, Frederic’s childhood nursemaid, is being played by senior Justina Frielich. Nate Heiner, a senior is playing the police Sergeant. The three daughters of the Major General who are named in the story (aside from Mabel) are Edith, Kate, and Isabel who are being played by Amanda Moore, Liz Madson (seniors), and Mackenzie Thomas (junior). Rehearsals with the full cast will begin on January 6th after school resumes from Holiday Break. Performances for the musical will take place the end of February and beginning of March.
The Kuna High School Act III performing group is the Advanced Acting class. This is the group that puts together plays and attends competitions. This week, auditions were held for acceptance into the advanced class for the next semester. There were a total of 11 people that were accepted into the class. Be on the lookout for more information regarding upcoming performances and concerts.
