Ryan Collins, a seventh grader at Kuna Middle School, has qualified to compete in the Idaho State Geographic Bee in Rexburg on Friday, April 4, 2014. The contest, put on for the last 26 years by the National Geographic Society, is part of the competition ladder to the national contest where students can compete for a $50,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.
Collins first placed in the top 25 in his school and then in a second level competition won first among the top 10. He then took a written exam to qualify for the state competition. The winner of the state competition will then go to Washington D.C. and the final round will be broadcast on Nat Geo Wild.
