Nobody enjoys paying taxes. But we all benefit from what they pay for – safe roads, clean water, quality public schools, well-equipped first responders, retirement security, and the best military in the world.
Like most Idahoans, you probably paid your fair share of taxes in 2013. Big oil companies aren’t like most Idahoans. Despite reaping $93 billion in profits and dishing out nearly $100 million in compensation to their CEOs this year, the five largest oil companies in America were still given a $2.4 billion tax subsidy – courtesy of the rest of us!
That’s just wrong. If we’re going to invest in energy, we should focus on the renewable energy sources we have right here in Idaho, like wind and solar.
Big Oil holds a lot of sway over this Republican-led Congress. Last year alone they spent $45 million on lobbying, and made sure their tax breaks were protected by the Paul Ryan budget – which passed the House last week with Raul Labrador’s eager support.
This election is so important because we need a Congress that will stand up to the wealthy special interests and put working families first.
