Melba FCCLA(Family Career and Community Leaders or America) attended State Leadership Conference in early April in Boise, with 600 other FCCLA members from around the state. While at SLC members learned new leadership skills, listened to motivational speakers, participated in community service projects and participated in STAR (Student Taking Action for Recognition) Events competitions.
Melba FCCLA members donated 8 blankets to Project Linus and made donations to the Ronald McDonald house. The Melba FCCLA received recognition for the following projects: Community Service, Financial Fitness, Student Body, Families First and was recognized as an Outstanding Idaho Chapter. Participation in these projects earned Melba FCCLA one hundred dollars.
Individual awards included: Interior Design, Erika Svedin, Jaden Beus and Sierra Bahem. They designed a house, including floorplans, elevations, budgets, and swatches of all paints, curtains, and upholstery for an elderly couple in a pocket neighborhood. These girls earned a silver award and placed first in the state. Karina Zavala competed in Interpersonal Communications. Karina and Jazmin Acosta conducted a bullying project with Mrs. Dickards 5th grade class. Karina earned a bronze medal and placed second in the state. Yolese Leon competed in Fashion Design where she drew 6 different dresses, chose one that she constructed, created a label, a marketing plan and budget to mass product her line. She placed second in the state. Suzi Stirm competed in Sports Nutrition where she choose a student athlete in a specific sport, designed meals for competitive and noncompetitive days, compared the food intake to the RDA and RDIs, created an activity schedule and suggest an app to be used by the student athlete to continue to eat for better performance. Suzi earned a gold medal and was first in her event.
Five of the STAR Event competitors earned the opportunity to attend NLC (National Leadership Conference) July 6-11 in San Antonio Texas.
