In Revelation chapters 2 and 3, we find 7 letters written to 7 churches. As you read through these letters you find it describes the general moral decline of society. In the first letter written to the church of Ephesus we read this; “(2:2-4) I know your works, your labor, you patience, and that you cannot bear those who do evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them to be liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” When surveys and polls are taken concerning the values we hold dearly, we find the polls overwhelmingly support traditional values— the right to life, the sanctify of marriage, the value of a family, the integrity of our national borders, the right of self-determination in our work choices and our worship choices, and the absolute right of our own opinion and the opportunity to express that opinion. These are the very values in which hundreds of thousands have sacrificed their lives to safeguard our way of life.
We took time last week and honored the brave men and women of our military, past and present, who made it possible to live in this great nation of ours, the United States of America. Yet, somehow, we have allowed a very small group of people to be put in a position to determine what we can and cannot say or even believe. We, as the vast majority, tend to just sit silently and watch them literally destroy everything we hold dear. In the church of Ephesus false teaching and false teachers were not put up with. They were removed from their position and expelled. The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians wrote this (5:11) “And having no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” By the time, you get to the last of the 7 churches we find society is complacent.
In Revelation 3:16 we read concerning the church of Laodicea, “So then, because you are lukewarn, and neither hot or cold, I will vomit you of of My mouth.” I realize the battle we are fighting is a spiritual battle and Satan is leading the charge. The Bible also tells us, in the last days, Satan will mislead many by a strong delusion. The church of Ephesus is told they need to get back to their first love. In Texas recently a proposed city council ordinance was presented which allowed a man or a woman to use whichever restroom or shower facility he or she wanted to based upon their gender identity that day. Thankfully, the public outcry was so great, the ordinance did not survive. Battles like this are going on around us every day and yet we do nothing. Just like the church of Ephesus we also need to get back to our first love. What is it the church was suppose to get back to? In Matthew, a lawyer ask Jesus a question, “Teacher, which is the great commandment of the law?” Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This great nation was built upon the standards of the Bible, and it is time we get back to them.
