Don Pannell was surprised on the occasion of his 60th birthday on Saturday, July 19, with a barbecue supper attended by friends and relatives at the Harker Barn. Don has been a presence in the community for many years, especially in the activities of the Olde Tyme Fourth of July. He has been rounding up chickens and directing the Chicken Chase for the kids nearly every year since it began. He also organized and directed the Horseshoe Pitching contest for many years.
His most memorable feat is giving a bouquet of flowers to every old widow lady around Melba onValentine’s Day or Mother’s Day or whenever the spirit moves him and he is the ultimate jokester.
In the winter time you will see Don out with his blade removing snow from around all the churches in Melba.
For all that he was named Citizen of the Year by the Olde Tyme Fourth of July committee in 2013.
Nearly 100 people helped him celebrate his birthday.
