This summer Kuna Parks and Recreation introduced the Kuna Summer Passport Program. This summer program offers many fun activities to engage kids in healthy behaviors. Passports were passed out the last week of school, are available at City Hall and the Library, and can also be printed off our Facebook page (Kuna Passport Program). Participants check off items on their Passport all summer long as they participate in activities aimed to encourage getting outside and being a good steward of the community. This program aligns with Mayor Nelson’s Year of the Kuna Kid campaign and focuses not only on Kuna kids but it also shows the dedication of the City of Kuna to encouraging healthy living in our community.
The Parks and Rec Department is happy to share our new Passport Program with the community and invite kids of all ages to join. Each Passport has several areas for the kids to participate. There is Biking and Walking Activities which includes hiking, bike safety and getting out and enjoying the Greenbelt. Outdoor Time aims to keep the kids active with swimming, boating, playing sports and even reading outside. We mustn’t forget Fishing Activities which is self-explanatory. Healthy Food Choices is another category on the Passport that asks kids to think about what they are choosing to eat and how they could change it. To round it all out is Good Steward of the City which reminds kids the importance of family and community by encouraging activities that respect both. Kids can keep track of their activities and parents can back them up by initialing when they have completed one.
Activity Suggestions: Hiking the Greenbelt; Taking a walk along the new tree path and reading the new signs; Picnics; Visiting the Kuna Farmer’s Market; Gardening with mom, dad or grandma; Swimming (it’s hot out); Biking; Reading outside (the library has a well shaded yard); Volunteering; Making your family a healthy snack; Throwing the football; Hiking or fishing around Swan Falls; Mowing your neighbor’s lawn; etc.
This Saturday, July 19th, you are invited to join Parks and Rec at the Kuna Visitor’s Center for a hike along the Greenbelt. The fun starts at 10 am. Then on July 26th we will be doing an obstacle course in the park. Prizes will be given. Keep tuned to the paper next week for more details.
Kids have all summer to complete their Passport and turn it in to City Hall by August 29th. On September 13th we will be having an awards program during the 150th Birthday Celebration for all the participants. This is a great way for kids to enjoy their time off from school and fill in those summer hours with fun.
