Still Time to File As a Write-In
Tuesday, May 21, 2013 is slated to be Election Day for up to 16 taxing districts in Ada County. In preparing the ballots for the upcoming election there may only be elections for nine of the 16 districts in the county. There will be a ballot question for the City of Meridian, a bond for the City of Eagle and candidate elections for West Boise Sewer District, the Boise Auditorium District and three school districts. The other districts only had one candidate file for office, so unless someone files as a write-in candidate; those elections will be cancelled.
It is not uncommon for smaller taxing districts to have uncontested elections, so why spend money on an election when the result is foregone? A key to the process however, is that the public should be provided notice of filing deadlines for public office. In the case of the election of trustees for the Kuna Library District and the Kuna Joint School District #3, the required notice was not printed in the Kuna Melba News.
A communications lapse between the paper that publishes once a week and the elections office prevented the notice from being published by the statutory deadline. As a result it is possible that someone may have wanted to run for a Kuna Library District or Kuna Joint School District #3 Trustee seat, but did not receive the official notice in the paper and was unable to file in time to get on the ballot.
Each of the two trustee seats for the Kuna Library District had one candidate file for office. For the Kuna Joint school District #3 one candidate filed for Zone 3 and two filed for Zone 4.
In light of the oversight to provide proper notice, any qualified elector wishing to run for one of the two Kuna Library District Trustee positions or either Zone 3 or 4 trustee of the Kuna Joint School District #3, may file as write-in candidates in accordance with the Notice of Write-in Filing Deadline contained within this paper.
